WHEN HURRICANE FORCES STRENGTHEN, SO DOES THE COMRADERY FOR SMALL BUSINESSES IN THESE COASTAL TOWNS

Evacuees looking for a safe harbor can head south to a small island off of the west coast of Florida and out of harms way from Hurricane Florence where three vacation rental companies have opened their arms, and doors, in response to the storm. During this same week last year, residents and guests on Sanibel Island were packing for the Carolinas as a place to escape to before Hurricane Irma hit and now, they’re preparing for those seeking refuge and a vacation all at the same time as a way to say ‘thank you’.

Hurricane season happens to fall at the same time as the ‘off season’ for tourism on Sanibel Island, causing businesses to experience lower income than desired and leave them searching for ways to make ends meet. That’s why Kim O’Brien of Breakaway Vacation Properties decided this was the perfect way to not only reciprocate for the hospitality shown to residents of the small coastal town last year but to possibly generate some income to make up for revenue lost for the same reason. “Small businesses are comprised of like minded individuals that are constantly finding ways to be solution oriented. We want to help out when and where we can for those in need. Let’s show our support for the residents of the Carolinas by opening our properties at discounted prices,” stated O’Brien. “Why not show each other some love and support each other when the opportunity presents itself?’ she added.

Towns don’t have to be directly hit to feel the effects of a hurricane.   Although spared by Hurricane Irma, Sanibel experienced strong effects that resulted in many businesses having to be closed for many weeks. “We know what it is like to have to stop everything to pack up and leave without knowing what you’ll come back to, stated Fran Peters, owner of Island Vacations. “But, before I can ever think about myself, I know that I need to help our guests by letting them know they should cancel their flights and rebook for a later time or if they’re already here, find somewhere else safe to go. So, for those who Hurricane Florence is forcing to change their plans but who can’t change their schedules to vacation at a later time, we would love to have them on Sanibel this week!” she finished.
